My Review and Sessions coming in early 2024
My Review
Why I Love It
In Earthborne Rangers, you feel that every aspect of the design, every description in the campaign guide, and every piece of art was fretted over, iterated, and loved. It isn’t a toss-off game to round out a catalog; it impeccably executes a unique and optimistic post-apocalyptic vision. If you spend a time with the game its morality starts to wear off on you. You will want to spend some time outside to appreciate your interconnection with the natural world around you. You will want to understand rather than overcomes challenges in your life. It’s a game that bridges between the “game experience” and the experience of “everyday life”.
- Beautiful art and evocative writing
- Doesn’t try to be the hardest and most challenging
- Allows me to approach situations outside the lens of conflict and killing
- Has something relevant and critical about the present state of the world and human society
- Fresh IP with an immense imagination
I played through the full campaign and plan to come back to it in early 2024. I’ll finalize my review during and after that campaign, as well as do a couple session reports. I’ve also been a playtester for Legacy of the Ancestors.
Official BGG Game Summary (abridged)
Earthborne Rangers is a customizable, co-operative card game set in the wilderness of the far future. You take on the role of a Ranger, a protector of the mountain valley you call home, and begin by building a deck that reflects your interests, history, and personality. Then, as you explore the open world and your story takes shape, you augment your deck with improved equipment, refined skills, and the memories of your journey.
The story of Earthborne Rangers is a branching narrative consisting of a main storyline and a multitude of side stories. You can choose to follow the critical path or to strike off on your own to discover the Valley’s many engaging characters, mysterious ruins, and beings both familiar and strange.
Awesome Resources
From Me
I’ve posted a Deck Construction series that examines every Specialty and Background in the game and Deck Construction and Progression from a higher level. I will likely revisit and update these posts as repeat playthroughs change my thoughts.
